Summary: Robert E. Roberts, D.D.S., Ph.D., M.S.W., lives in New Orleans and was formerly a dentist and clinical professor at Tulane Medical Center`s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. At Tulane, he founded Project Return, an internationally recognized prison reentry program aimed at breaking the cycles of crime sensibly and without further harm.
Project Return has been the subject of a documentary film, Road to Return, narrated by Tim Robbins and produced by John Densmore of The Doors. The program has been featured on the front pages of The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times, and numerous other newspapers and television shows around the world. For many years, Project Return was the only privately operated prisoner reentry program to be funded by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Former prisoners with the highest risk factors for returning to prison are the first to be accepted into each new class. In spite of this, its 3,500 graduates have a sixty-five percent less chance of returning to prison than non-participants, which has produced a twenty-to-one return on investment by the state legislature.
Memoirs of Roberts. journey into the darkness of our prison system are to be found in MY SOUL SAID TO ME, An Unlikely Journey Behind the Walls of Justice, available at bookstores, or directly from HCI Books at (800) 441-5569 or www.hcibooks.com .
